It’s official: McRobbie is new IU president

Indiana University trustees have voted unanimously to name Michael McRobbie, currently interim provost of IU Bloomington, as president.

The widely anticipated appointment will replace Adam Herbert, who said about a year ago he would leave when his contract ends in June 2008.

However, since a replacement was found earlier, Herbert now will step down July 1 this year.

Trustee President Steve Ferguson credited McRobbie with showing he has what it takes to lead an institution like IU, and that he has elevated the university’s stature in informatics and life science research.

"Michael has been the driving force behind many of our proudest accomplishments," Ferguson said in a statement.

Indiana economic development specialists earlier today hailed McRobbie for the contribution to the state’s economy they anticipate he will make.

The other finalist was Ora Pescovitz, associate dean for research affairs at the IU School of Medicine and CEO of Riley Hospital for Children.
