German company files plan for huge Tipton plant

Tipton, the community north of Hamilton County, might become home to a Getrag Corporate Group transmission plant if the German company follows through on a plan it filed recently with the Tipton County Plan Commission.

The plan calls for building a total of 700,000 square feet on 228 acres at U.S. 31 and State Road 28, according to the Kokomo Tribune. The project would include three buildings.

The plant, which is expected to make dual-clutch transmissions for Daimler-Chrysler, has been estimated to cost $560 million and employ 1,200.

A site farther north in Kokomo also is thought to be a contender for the plant, but officials in that city say they have not received a plan.
