Nearly 60 people protested outside the Monument Circle offices of WellPoint Inc. this morning, calling for the government to replace insurers as providers of health benefits.
Inside, where WellPoint shareholders gathered for their annual meeting, outgoing CEO Larry C. Glasscock showed a video titled "Why We're Here." He said the Indianapolis health insurer aims "to improve lives and the health of our communities."
But outside, protesters accused WellPoint of turning profits by turning away patients. They chanted "People, not profits," and encouraged passing motorists to honk in support.
After the meeting Glasscock answered several questions from three protesters, who had attended the meeting because they own WellPoint stock.
