Casino owner wants to move license

The owner of two riverboat casinos in Gary is talking with a state legislator about moving one of his two state gaming licenses to Steuben County in northeastern Indiana, according to The Times of Munster.

Majestic Star owner Don Barden said the area near Michigan and Ohio is “underserved” for gamblers.

The mayor of Gary, Rudy Clay, told the newspaper that he wants more information, but that his initial reaction is that the city would want promises of significant revenue in return for allowing such a move.

State Rep. Charlie Brown, D-Gary, said northwest Indiana legislators would demand a huge substitute for losing a casino, such as Barden’s funding a teaching hospital at Indiana University Northwest in Gary.
