Emmis to host McCain campaign stop

Republican presidential candidate John McCain is coming to Emmis Communications Corp. headquarters on Monument Circle, McCain’s campaign said yesterday.

McCain is scheduled to appear Friday at 9 a.m.

Is McCain venturing into enemy territory, considering Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan traditionally supports Democrats and has contributed to both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama?

“Our lobby is open for them, too, and we would invite them to come join us,” said Emmis spokeswoman Kate Snedeker.

Snedeker pointed out that Gov. Mitch Daniels, a Republican, has held fund raisers in the lobby twice, once during his first campaign and again a few weeks ago.

However, she would not say who Smulyan backs for president.
