COVID-19 cases in Indiana tick down again

The Indiana State Department of Health on Wednesday reported 1,480 new cases of COVID-19, the lowest daily tally since Oct. 7, when it reported 1,302 new cases.

The state also reported 36 new deaths due to the coronavirus. Reported deaths due to COVID-19 have exceeded single digits in 114 of the past 115 days.

The department said 5,639 new individuals were tested Tuesday.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 fell from 1,624 on Monday to 1,582 on Tuesday, the lowest number since Oct. 22. The high mark was 3,460, set on Nov. 30.

The state said more than 166,000 Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as Wednesday at 5 a.m. More than 611,000 had received the first dose of a vaccination.

In its weekly update of long-term-care-facility COVID-19 counts, the department said there were 448 new cases and 91 more deaths among residents over the week ended Jan. 27, bringing resident totals during the pandemic to 23,451 cases and 4,923 deaths. There have been 15,234 cumulative staff cases and 20 staff deaths.
