FedEx Supply Chain, the third-party logistics division of FedEx Corp., plans to lay off 179 employees in Indianapolis.

In a notice to the state posted Monday, the company said the decision is part of a move to discontinue its management and operation of a facility on the city’s west side.

FedEx said it decided to transition the business to a new location that will be managed by a new third-party logistics provider. The facility at 225 Transfer Drive has served as a Target distribution center.

The layoffs are expected to occur in four phases. The first is scheduled to take place between Jan. 31 and Feb. 14, with the second taking place between Feb. 3 and Feb. 17.

“During the first and second phase of reductions, approximately 85 employees will be terminated as a result of volume reductions in connection with this transition,” the company said in its WARN Notice. These affected employees will be paid wages and benefits through their last day of employment with FedEx Supply Chain, Inc.”

The company said the third phase of layoffs will occur between March 31 and April 13. The final phase will take place between June 17 and June 30.

The layoffs are expected to be permanent and the affected employees are not represented by a union.

FedEx did not specify if the affected workers will have an opportunity to regain their jobs with the new logistics provider. The company did not immediately respond to inquiries about the layoffs.
