    1. Wouldn’t expect them to fully commit, as it’s not a done deal, yet

What does say a lot is their language has changed, specifically “continuing to build our working relationship together.” with the people in Indiana is a definite change in tone, and an expectation this is for the long-term. That’s a big deal.

  1. Would love to see it happen, but stand by my hunch that the Hammond carrot for Indiana is really just a stick to get Illinois to sweeten a deal to keep the Bears in-state.

  2. Please gawd let the Bear’s stay in Illinois. Wolf Lake should NOT be for sale. And make no bones about it, that is what will happen, as the studies are already being done. Wolf Lake will be drained. Because millionaire owners and players are WAY more important than the environment and family amenities. Great. Ruth’s Chris won’t matter a hill of beans to all of those families who are losing their main summer recreation.

  3. Even with other taxes, it seems like a 1% food & beverage tax increase isn’t sufficient to fund a $2 billion stadium. Lucas Oil Stadium – built almost 20 years ago at 1/3 of that cost – required a 1% tax on about 1.8 million people with Marion County having a large convention business. Lake and Porter counties have about 700,000 people with limited visitors. Let’s see the math.

    1. If I read the article right, and the reporting is accurate, the food and beverage tax is ear marked for infrastructure improvements, while the ticket tax is for stadium construction itself.

And if I recall, the Central Indiana 1% has also gone to Gainbridge / Convention Center other large capital projects, so the Lake/Porter county’s 1% might be sufficient for this infrastructure – depends on how long the bond issuance is for – but can seem plausible.

    2. Of note, they’re requiring the Indiana Sports Corp to divert 20% of their budget to this facility.

“The people using the facility are going to be the ones paying,” Huston said. “So this isn’t an appropriation that’s coming out of the education fund. This is the bond that will be paid for by the facility.”

It’s almost as though Huston is telling you where they’re going to make the cuts when he’s wrong.
