Yet again, a IBJ story on the vehicle tax increases and not one single quote from a CCC Republican on why they aren’t supporting the legislative deal that was passed for Indianapolis by Statehouse Republicans.
+1
I guess they agreed with Hogsett that this tax increase should not be passed.
Good. So sick of all this cutting taxes and not fixing anything. If you want decent roads, schools, policing etc etc, then it has to be paid for. Put the gas tax back, too….
The Dumbocrats will spend it on anything but roads.
Agreed. Austerity has gotten us nothing.
The tax cutting supporters are the biggest complainers about roads, schools, police, snow removal, etc and then use that as justification for more cuts. Backwards.
More taxes. Where does it stop?
BASED
All Dumbocrats voters, this is what you voted for, smfh
Crawl back under your bridge, little troll, the adults are celebrating
Are you 8 years old? Act like an adult. How embarrassing for you. Taxes are your dues for being part of a society. And, yes, I vote for elected officials who believe we should have well-maintained roads.
Tatman… This is due to republican legislation.
Your existence is a walking billboard for us to re-invest in public education.
Surprised at this vote…and glad to hear it. To those of you who are mad about additional taxes, look no farther than the Republican legislature. They have put Indy in an untenable position, and Hogsett’s ideas were mealy-mouthed and ineffective.
Much needed, and cheaper than replacing tires and wheels.
You get what you pay for. And you don’t get what you don’t pay for. Great cities understand that.
This is true. People, and businesses, vote with their feet. They aren’t flocking to conservative, low-tax cities with minimal public services and bad infrastructure like Indy or Jacksonville. Even in the more Conservative-leaning South, the big growth drivers are cities which invest heavily in transportation and transit infrastructure (Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, Charlotte, Raleigh, Richmond, etc.). Austerity is not good for business and economic development.
I want to make it crystal clear that I am not opposed to this tax increase as long as it is used as stated. What I do think is laughable in this case and so many other cases (and I posted this in this forum when Hogsett originally vetoed it,) is the theater used by politicians of both parties to veto something they know all along will be overridden. In this case, Hogsett can now say that he never approved any tax increase during his time as mayor. Wink, Wink. Now, he will say something like “our work is not done, 4 more years, 4 more years.”
I’m not so sure Hogsett will be able to effective use of that. What he actually revealed was his total lack of leadership and long term planning. The legislature made it clear Indy had to have a new tax source to get this money. There is a very real chance, if Hogsett’s plan went forward the state Attorney General would have stepped in and ruled that Indy did not meet the criteria for the new funding.
The Republican state legislature wanted to make sure Indy had to self inflict pain just so we could get the debate that we are seeing in these comments. They needed to throw something at Indy voters just to be able to say “see how evil those Democrats are”? It was a good plan and it will sway a certain percentage of voters.
The coordinated messaging from statehouse republicans after the vote last night confirms Dan’s statement
This story would have been far more informative had it included information on the state road funding. Our Republican legislature has seen fit to fund a four lane heavily traveled road equal to a one lane lightly traveled road. Consequently, Marion County receives FAR less per lane mile than other counties. Ergo the need to take action
It’s also important to note that this extra $100M is a fraction of the estimated $3B needed to completely address Indy’s pothole backlog. I’m already seeing disingenuous Twitter posts from folks saying they better not see another pothole now. As usual, they stay silent on the road funding issues created by our state that enabled the current conditions we face
Deeply unpopular, but necessary. Supportive of this increase or not, I think we can all agree that keeping the wheel tax flat for 30 years was astonishingly bad policy. I hope this is revised to tie the wheel tax to some sort of index so it’s adjusted every 4 years. That way we avoid the sticker shock and avoid the problem of kicking this can down the road for decades again.
The dems never met a tax they didn’t like. Certainly shines the light on the planning or the lack thereof with respect to the current administration. Totally inept.
Jeffery – This was effectively mandated by the State GOP. The whole “Dems love taxes” thing here is moot. That’s a boring, and untrue, talking point. It’s time for the right-wingers to come up with something else, especially since the right’s economic policies are failing so unbelievably hard.
It’s not just effectively mandated either. The state literally requires municipalities establish a wheel tax to access these funds in ‘28 and beyond. Why can republicans own the consequences of their own politicking? All they can do is blame the other side. Luckily, democrats aren’t afraid to actually get things done even when there may be a political consequence to pay.
This entire thing was engineered to allow Republicans to make a stink, regardless of outcome.
Republican tax mandate passes: Indy is criticized for enacting the only option the State GOP gave them.
Republican tax mandate fails: Republicans criticize Indy for not investing in infrastructure.
Republicans have never not been petty and vindictive. Republicans have never not loved micro-managing Indianapolis and hoarding money that we have already paid, while claiming that they are “fiscally prudent.” Republicans have never not loved Indy’s money but have always hated Indy.
Republicans cheat, lie, and steal.
