  1. I guess the usual people who post negative on all social media will somehow slam this article too…Seems like the city has negotiated a GREAT deal for Decatur too. Imagine the tax revenue for the city if they allowed Data Centers in other industrial areas around town. We would not be charge taxes like wheel taxes….Moritorium for what??

    1. Imagine the tax revenue for the city if they focused on recruiting high-density, high-paying jobs, improving our horrible higher education metrics so that we can continue to build momentum in attracting those kinds of jobs, and improving our bottom of the barrel quality of life metrics to make people want to move and build families here. Or, we can cheerlead giving out of state corporations massive tax breaks and celebrate the pittance that our city/state is able to eke out for these gigantic empty boxes that don’t employ many people and probably won’t even be in business long enough to get through the abatements. We know you and your three “friends” have stunningly low expectations, so it makes sense that you love this.

  2. Given that we are stuck with Sabey, I do feel like the IED has provided a purposeful way to get dollars into the community. I am still not a fan of corporate welfare. If it were coupled with tax breaks for hardworking homeowners, I might think differently. But a new $48.7mill per year into the general fund isn’t a bad thing. There was obviously thought given to the deal, as the IED is requiring 10 years of maintenance funding for the aquatic center, which DPW/Parks would NEVER have been able to manage. And the upfront money for the roads and the aquatic center is important. Not that $5 million is going to go very far with roads in Decatur, but it is better than no additional funds at all. Making even a weak lemonade from lemons that you are stuck with, is better than no lemonade at all.

    1. I guess Michael would not get Decatur to NOT get $5 m for roads and NOT get a $30m aquatic center. Thank you Josh Bain. I bet you don’t live in Decatur.

  3. It should be noted that a tax abatement never results in lower taxes for the site. It is only a lowering of how fast the higher taxes take effect. In year 1 post completion they pay more taxes than the site generated pre-development and the tax continues to rise each year thereafter.
