  1. The Indiana University Board of Trustees’ recent policy changes reflect a long tradition of reforming university governance to ensure accountability, clarity, and alignment with current institutional responsibilities. While emeriti faculty have made invaluable contributions, governance authority must rest with those actively employed and engaged in the university’s academic and operational mission.

Throughout history, universities have periodically refined governance structures to preserve integrity and adaptability. From postwar expansions that formalized faculty senates to modern reforms emphasizing fiscal and administrative accountability, such adjustments ensure decision-making remains grounded in those directly responsible for today’s outcomes. The changes codified in Indiana Code §21 and IU’s policy BOT-19 follow that same logic.

These measures do not diminish the value or wisdom of emeriti professors; they reaffirm the principle that governance authority carries both accountability and liability, responsibilities that belong to current faculty. By clearly defining roles and participation, IU strengthens its foundation for transparency, responsiveness, and long-term institutional health.

In doing so, the trustees are not “doing harm,” but ensuring that university governance remains contemporary, representative, and consistent with best practices across higher education.
