The family that owns the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is seeking permission to start drilling for oil on property it owns near Terre Haute.
The Vigo County planning commission on Wednesday approved zoning changes to allow the drilling on about six acres owned by the Grace Hulman Real Estate Trust and Anton Hulman Jr. Real Estate Trust. The Tribune-Star reports the land is near the Terre Haute airport just east of the city.
Attorney Louis Britton told the board that the property is "near and dear" to the Hulman family and that all safety precautions were being taken.
Several oil wells are already active at other nearby sites.
A decision on the zoning change next goes to the Vigo County commissioners.
