Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White has hired former Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi as his lead defense attorney in his fight against voter fraud charges.

The Hamilton County court system's online records show that Brizzi filed his representation for White on Tuesday.

White and Brizzi are both Republicans. Brizzi didn't seek re-election last year amid criticism of his ties to Indianapolis businessman Timothy Durham, who faces federal charges of running a $200 million fraud scheme.

The Associated Press left a message seeking comment from Brizzi.

A grand jury in March indicted White on felony counts of voter fraud and perjury, charging that he illegally listed his ex-wife's address as his own on voting and loan forms and served on the Fishers Town Council when he was ineligible.

The Indiana Recount Commission voted 3-0 in late June to allow White to remain in office, denying a challenge to his eligibility by the Democratic party. The party is appealing the decision.
