The Indiana State Fair will celebrate the versatility of the soybean and its $2.5 billion impact on the state during its 17-day run beginning Friday.

Fair officials say soybeans and their products help feed the world, provide shelter and even power vehicles. The Indiana soybean industry is the fifth largest in the country.

Among the fair's exhibits will be a Habitat for Humanity home built with soybean products in the paint, insulation and carpet. The State Fair Gift Shop is selling soybean items including scarves, ties, T-shirts and candles.

The soybean is the latest of Indiana farm commodities featured during the state fair. It previously featured pigs, tomatoes, hardwoods and corn.

The fair runs through Aug. 21 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on the north side of Indianapolis.
