Indianapolis Public Schools will be in session Aug. 8, and School on Wheels is hoping to recruit 55 more volunteer tutors for the fall semester.

School on Wheels runs tutoring sessions for kids at area homeless shelters each week. The organization is trying to ramp up its volunteer tutor force so it can offer sessions more often, and it set the ambitious goal of recruiting 100 new tutors in 100 days.

School on Wheels tutors can be as young as 11, if accompanied by a guardian. Tutors commit to one hour each week for the semester, and they work at the same shelter throughout the semester. (Interested volunteers should visit www.indyschoolonwheels.org, or contact Laura Alvarado, laura@indysow.org.)

Approaching its 10th anniversary in September, School on Wheels has expanded its work to mentoring, parental support, and providing uniforms and backpacks.
