Franklin College receives $4.2 million donation

Franklin College announced Friday morning that it has received a $4.2 million gift from the estate of a former school trustee.

Effie Joan Behrens, a longtime resident of Indianapolis and a Fort Wayne native, had been a trustee from 1991 until her death in December 2010.

In accordance with her wishes, 75 percent of her contribution has been allocated to the college endowment for student scholarships and church relations. Trustees directed the remaining unrestricted funds to the college’s capital campaign. They also will name the college’s new softball complex Behrens Field.

Founded in 1834, Franklin College is a four-year liberal arts institution with an enrollment of about 1,000 students about 25 miles south of Indianapolis.
