Republican Mike Pence says creating jobs must be "job one" if he's elected Indiana governor.

Pence outlined his agenda Saturday before the state Republican convention. He has six broad goals: increase private employment, increase manufacturing jobs, improve elementary students' reading and math skills, increase graduation rates, improve the quality of the Hoosier workforce and boost families' health and safety.

But he says the top priority is creating jobs, and he hopes to have more Hoosiers going to work than any time in state history.

That's a tall order, as Indiana's unemployment rate hovered around 3 percent in the late '90s, but was at 7.9 percent in April.

Pence didn't say how he would achieve his goals. A spokeswoman says his campaign will spend the summer working on that.
