UIndy receives $2M gift to help archive city’s history

Lilly Endowment Inc. has awarded the University of Indianapolis a $2 million grant to help it begin cataloging four decades of city history as part of the university’s planned Institute for Civic Leadership & Mayoral Archives.

Former Indianapolis mayors Richard Lugar, William Hudnut, Stephen Goldsmith and Bart Peterson have donated to UIndy documents, images and recordings to be cataloged and digitized.

The archives will be the centerpiece of the institute, which will serve as a hub for research and teaching. The institute also will enable the university to expand its academic programs.

The grant is the largest single contribution the university has received so far as part of its $7.5 million capital campaign to equip, staff and launch the institute.
