Stone had led the Carmel-based company since 1997 and is a member of its board. He will continue his board service beyond 2013, the insurer said in a statement.

CEO-elect Smith is a 32-year insurance veteran, joining Indiana Farmers Mutual in 2000. She is now executive vice president and legal counsel.

Smith earned a degree from Indiana University School of Law and has a bachelor’s from Indiana State University, where she is chairwoman-elect of ISU Foundation’s board.

She’s also a board member for Sycamore Foundation Holdings and of the Indiana Guaranty Association.

The 136-year-old Indiana Farmers Mutual provides auto, home, farm and business insurance.
