Mike Pence says new federal education data shows Indiana's 4th and 8th grade students demonstrated the second largest improvement rate among states last year on standardized math and reading tests.
The 2013 Nation's Report Card released Thursday by the National Center for Education Statistics and the U.S. Department of Education shows Indiana's 4th graders ranked fourth in the nation in average math scores and demonstrated statistically significant improvements in both math and reading scores.
Fifty-two percent of Indiana 4th graders tested at or above proficient in math, compared to the national average of 42 percent.
Pence credits accountability standards for schools and other steps in recent years for fueling the improvement.
State Schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz says she's encouraged by the gains, particularly those in the fourth grade.
