Indiana lawmakers say they plan to seek funding for the state's 2-1-1 service, a non-emergency telephone help line that assists callers with finding the social services they need.

The service currently receives $3.3 million from private donations. Republican Rep. Jud McMillin of Brookville said Thursday he will seek $2 million in state funding to help 2-1-1 continue and expand its services.

The information and referral service helps struggling or vulnerable people find food pantries, housing assistance, health care and other local services they might need.

The additional funding would help manage an increase in call volume and improve the quality of service that 2-1-1 provides to clients including veterans, seniors, victims of domestic abuse and pregnant women. McMillin said that without the additional funding, the service might become unsustainable.
