Subscribe NowIt is obvious that Anthony Schoettle is not a fan of nor well informed about the Indianapolis Motor Speedway [Elements in place to keep IMS under family ownership, May 23]. Tony Hulman bought the Speedway from Eddie Rickenbacker, not Wilbur Shaw.
Hulman’s “tax avoiding maneuver” was as legal and ethical as writing-off interest on a home loan. The Hulman grandchildren and great grandchildren have been at odds for generations, yet the Speedway has survived.
Over the years, there have been many rumors about the sale of the Speedway, yet it remains intact. Schoettle should be writing about what the Speedway has done for the Indianapolis area for over 100 years and has not asked for anything in return. I cannot recall the IMS asking the city to build them a fieldhouse or a football stadium.
