Indiana lawmaker being deployed for Puerto Rico recovery

November 16, 2017

A Republican state senator will miss at least a portion of the 2018 Indiana General Assembly for an Army Reserve deployment.

The Senate's leader said Sen. Mike Delph of Carmel will be on active duty beginning Dec. 8 for at least 31 days as he's being sent to Puerto Rico for recovery work from damage caused by Hurricane Maria in September.

That will cause Delph to miss at least the opening days of the General Assembly's session that starts in early January. Senate President Pro Tem David Long said Delph will be given time off from his legislative duties while being deployed.

Delph is a major in the Army Reserves. He's been a state senator since 2006 and is chairman of the Senate's veterans affairs committee.
