A former Marsh Supermarket in Geist that was converted into a Needler’s Fresh Market less than two years ago is scheduled to close at the end of January.

Findlay, Ohio-based Fresh Encounter Inc., which operates the Needler’s Fresh Market at 11625 Fox Road, announced this week it will close the store near East 79th Street and Oaklandon Road in the Geist Center shopping plaza, according to the company.

“While we seek and relish opportunities for calculated, favorable growth, we must at times make some of the more difficult decisions for the success of the company as a whole,” CEO and President Michael Needler Jr. said in a written statement. “Unfortunately, these decisions at times include closing stores that are in an unprofitable mode with limited or no viability for the longer term."

A Fresh Encounter representative did not return IBJ’s calls seeking comment Wednesday afternoon, but a store employee confirmed the closure.

Needler’s Fresh Market was created as a new moniker when Fresh Encounter purchased 15 former Marsh Supermarkets locations, including the one in Geist, in June 2017 following Marsh's bankruptcy. Fresh Encounter manages groceries in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.

The acquisition included the lease for the Lockerbie Marketplace store in downtown Indianapolis, as well as for the store at 5802 W. U.S. 52 in New Palestine. The other locations are outside the Indianapolis area.

The Indianapolis-area stores will remain open.
