A national newsmagazine for the gay and lesbian community has named Bloomington as its top U.S. small-town vacation destination.
The Advocate and OutTraveler.com chose the "accepting, forward-thinking, progressive college town" of Bloomington
ahead of
four others including Ashville, N.C.; and Ann Arbor, Mich.
The magazine’s list last month was good news for the Bloomington Convention and Visitors Bureau, which has been promoting
the town as a gay-friendly tourist destination for years.
The effort began after the 2000 Census showed Bloomington was home to the fifth-largest per-capita population of same-sex
couples in the nation. The sales pitch included the creation of www.visitgaybloomington.com.
