This op ed describes a market with many buyers and sellers without significant barriers to entry. Many, if not most, US markets have experienced consolidation on the seller side and significant volume-related barriers to entry. This allows companies to charge higher prices, leading to higher profits. In these cases, taxes on economic rents would seem to be appropriate.
