The Indiana State Department of Health on Friday continued to report escalating cases of COVID-19 and rising hospitalizations due to the virus, along with 22 more deaths.

The health department reported 5,476 new cases of COVID, the highest number of cases in the daily report since Jan. 9, when 6,045 new cases were reported.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 increased from 2,602 on Wednesday to 2,617 on Thursday, the largest number since Jan. 8, when 2,678 people were hospitalized with the coronavirus. Almost a third (32.9%) of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds are occupied by COVID patients.

The 22 new deaths due to COVID-19 lifted the cumulative total to 14,330 during the pandemic. The seven-day moving average of new deaths remained at 19 per day, the health department said.

The state released the latest statistics for so-called breakthrough cases, hospitalizations and deaths on Thursday, reflecting data through Sept. 2. The numbers, which are updated weekly, showed that 22,666 Hoosiers who had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 have since tested positive for the virus, while 523 required hospitalization and 144 died. The average age of a breakthrough death was 79 years old.

More than 3.14 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Thursday at 5 a.m. The state did not have its vaccination dashboard updated with the latest numbers as of midday Friday.

Following are the latest COVID-19 numbers from the Indiana State Department of Health. The department updates its data daily based on information received through 11:59 p.m. the previous day.
