Excellent article, Derek. Sometimes timing and ‘protocol’ do not match program needs. That was the case when IU allowed Dusty May to end up at Michigan. Regardless of ‘protocol’ ‘appearances’ or even contracts, IU needs to make sure that Steele isn’t ‘stolen’..as May was. Rest assured, he will not be at Miami next season. If Steele is unavailable, then IU needs to get Josh Schertz now at St. Louis and a top 20 team. Schertz, many will recall, lifted Indiana State before moving on to the Billikens. IU’s current program has the look, feel and future of moldy bread, and has had through multiple inadequate leaders of the program…including this one. It’s an inconvenient truth that needs correcting ASAP regardless of $$$ or appearances.
It’s a little too early to call Devries a failure. He’s done a decent job with having to build an entirely new roster coming into the program after the transfer portal opened and most notable recruits had already committed to other schools. Let’s see what kind of roster he can build for next year, I think he will be successful.
Travis Steele is a great success story this season but one good season at a mid major doesn’t make him a program builder. He had 5 years at Xavier and had difficulty managing the personalities and maintaining the success they were accustomed to, and IU is a far bigger stage than Xavier is. Just because he’s a good guy doesn’t make him the right guy for IU.
And Pete is playing with Miami freshman Justin Kirby from Fishers High School . . . another kid who was underestimated.
