He made the announcement at the association’s regularly scheduled meeting and intends to leave the post Aug. 1.
The IHSAA will begin the search for Cox’s successor following the executive committee’s February meeting. Cox, 63, took over for Blake Ress on Feb. 1, 2011.
As commissioner, Cox pushed for more corporate sponsors and better technology while promoting better sportsmanship and stronger health initiatives. He also embraced the Champions Together program, which worked with Special Olympics of Indiana to establish new state tournaments.
Cox also has served as the IHSAA’s assistant commissioner from 2000-11, on the National Federation of State High School Associations, the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, Indiana Sports Corp., the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel, and the Center for Sports Leadership and Innovation. He is on the board of directors for the 2022 College Football Playoff Host Committee.
Before working for the IHSAA, Cox spent 21 years as a teacher, coach, and athletic administrator in Carmel.
“It has been an honor to serve as commissioner of this great organization,” Cox said in a statement. “I will take away fond memories and a sense of accomplishment on behalf of our member schools and thousands of Hoosier students knowing that education-based athletics remains vitally important and relevant in our state.”
