Indiana COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations continue to rise

The Indiana State Department of Health on Tuesday reported 731 new COVID-19 cases—the largest number of new cases in the department’s daily report in two months. The last time the count was so high was May 21, when 801 new cases were reported.

The 7-day moving average of daily cases has risen from 216 to 543 since the beginning of the month.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 rose from 510 on Monday to 557 on Tuesday. That’s the highest level since June 8, when 584 people were hospitalized. The pandemic high mark for hospitalizations was 3,460, set on Nov. 30.

The health department reported seven more deaths from COVID-19, raising the cumulative total to 13,536. The state said it has averaged one new death per day from COVID over the past seven days.

The state said more than 2.9 million Hoosiers have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 after a daily increase of 5,833. More than 2.87 million have received the first dose of a two-dose vaccination.

Following are the latest COVID-19 numbers from the Indiana State Department of Health. The department updates its data daily based on information received through 11:59 p.m. the previous day. The department no longer issues reports on Saturday and Sunday.
