The Indiana State Department of Health on Wednesday reported another jump in hospitalizations due to COVID-19 as statewide cases rose to their highest level in nearly seven months.

The state reported 3,558 new cases of COVID-19, the highest number since Jan. 22, when 3,560 new cases were reported. Marion County reported 343 new COVID-19 cases.

The department said statewide hospitalizations due to COVID rose from 1,517 on Monday to 1,616, the largest number since Feb. 1, when 1,624 people were hospitalized with the virus. The number was fewer than 500 a month ago. The state said 18.5% of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds are occupied by COVID patients.

The state reported 25 new deaths from COVID, raising the cumulative number to 13,768. The seven-day moving average of new deaths rose from eight to nine per day, the health department said.

More than 10,200 individuals were tested for COVID-19 on Tuesday, the highest daily testing number since late January.

More than 3 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Wednesday at 5 a.m. About 17,330 other Hoosiers had received the first dose of a two-dose vaccine but not the second dose.
