They’re for control.
Townships exposes their hypocrisy about less government because they should have went away decades ago. Cities or counties can handle what they do, and should get the township taxes to do those tasks.
Township government is a vestige of the 1800’s when it could take a day to ride to your county seat to do business. Government closer to the people made sense.
Now in most Indiana counties you can be at your county seat in less than 15 minutes. Most functions of township government can and should be merged into city or county government.
Where I live, the county seat has 6,000 people. The township is a total of 7,000. Merging the two make total sense. The entire county of 17,000 has 12 townships or 1,400 people average per township. It doesn’t make sense
The process in Michigan was always easy. Once part of a Township was Incorporated, it was no longer part of the Township. In cases where only a portion of the Township was incorporated (two examples of where I lived would be Kalamazoo and Plymouth), the Township would still exist for the unincorporated portion, but the incorporated portion was no longer part of the Township. In the case of my hometown of Portage, the entire township was incorporated into the City of Portage so no “Portage Township” government entity exists.
