Letter: Journalism is secret to democracy

Thank you, Nate, for your courage and voice [“Nate Feltman: Ukraine’s courage unites the west,” Oct. 21].

My grandfather was Eben Roy Alexander. He was the editor in chief of Time magazine when it was one of the leading publications of its time. I remember when I was 12 or 13, for whatever reason, he told me that journalism was the secret sauce of a successful democracy. He said journalism was the highest calling. That journalists had a sacred responsibility to the “sheep” to tell the “truth.”

Sadly, in my opinion, journalism has moved in a different direction. The result: too many thoughtful people struggling to know what truth is. I’m among them! Thank you for positioning IBJ among the rare truth tellers!

I and my friends and family deeply appreciate you and your principles.
