A few years ago, I got a rooftop solar assessment from a local company. They told me it was a no-go because of all the big old trees in my downtown neighborhood.

I’m still disappointed about that. However, there are other ways to go solar: There is community solar, and there is plug-in solar. But neither of these options are currently allowable under Indiana law.

Senate Bill 541, introduced in the 2025 session, would have legalized community solar by July 2026, but it didn’t pass. HB 1084, introduced in 2026, would have created a legal path for us to purchase and plug in our own solar panels, but it didn’t pass, either.

The Indiana General Assembly reconvenes in January of 2027. I’m asking that you contact your elected representatives and encourage them to create the legal framework we need for access to solar power (see solarunitedneighbors.org for help with this).

Why? Because currently our electric bills are distressingly high and because future generations will suffer in proportion to how much fossil fuel we continue to burn — when we don’t even have to!

Solar power, once it’s set up, provides unlimited free clean energy to power our world. Let’s make it legal in Indiana.
