The future of Indiana is built on education, innovation, and strong communities—and few institutions embody this more than Indiana State University. As mayor of Terre Haute, I see firsthand how Indiana State University serves as a cornerstone of our local and regional economy, producing talented graduates who become the next generation of teachers, nurses, entrepreneurs and leaders.

For that reason, I write to express my strong support for Indiana State University’s $47 million capital budget request to renovate Holmstedt Hall, an academic facility that has long supported student success but now requires significant modernization to meet the demands of a 21st-century learning environment.

The growth and continued success of Indiana State University directly contributes to the vibrancy of Terre Haute. Increased enrollment brings new energy to our downtown, supports local businesses and fuels job creation. The university’s commitment to innovation and excellence enhances our city’s quality of life and helps us attract new residents. ISU is more than a campus. It is a driver of economic development, a hub of cultural and intellectual activity and a valued partner in shaping the future of our city.

As Terre Haute grows, our city’s future is tied to the strength and vitality of Indiana State University. The university is one of our largest employers, a critical community partner and a driver of economic and workforce development. This investment is not just about preserving a building; it’s about positioning ISU to continue producing job-ready graduates who will shape the future of Indiana.

I urge state leaders and decision-makers to support this capital request and invest in the modernization of Holmstedt Hall. It is a smart, necessary investment that will strengthen education, workforce readiness, and the overall competitiveness of our region and state.

Terre Haute mayor
