Arsenal Technical High School drum corps members parade around Monument Circle in March 1929, after the school’s basketball team reached the state finals. The team lost in the championship game, but students were still given a day off school to celebrate (the unofficial celebration began the evening before, when students wreaked havoc around the city, which included a bonfire on the south steps of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument). The Soldiers and Sailors Monument played host to chants, songs and speeches, as well as performances by the school’s bands and the glee club. Indianapolis Public Schools acquired the former U.S. Civil War-era arsenal in 1912 to open its third high school. Arsenal Tech was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
