The Indiana State Department of Health on Friday reported a slight daily decrease in COVID-19 cases, but a rise in hospitalizations and deaths from the virus.

The department reported 4,893 new cases of COVID-19, 134 fewer cases than in Thursday’s report. Marion County reported 725 new cases.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 rose from 2,108 on Wednesday to 2,186 on Thursday, the largest number since Jan. 23, when 2,188 people were hospitalized with the virus. More than a quarter (26%) of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds are occupied by COVID patients.

The state reported another 21 deaths from COVID-19, raising the cumulative death toll to 13,936. The seven-day moving average of new deaths remained at 14 per day, the health department said.

More than 3 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Friday at 5 a.m. About 21,607 other Hoosiers had received the first dose of a two-dose vaccine but not the second dose.

The state released the latest statistics for so-called breakthrough cases, hospitalizations and deaths on Thursday, reflecting data through Aug. 19. The numbers, which are updated weekly, showed that 12,783 Hoosiers who had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 have since tested positive for the virus, while 322 required hospitalization and 93 died. The average age of a breakthrough death was 80 years old.
