US Foods is setting the stage for a $20 million expansion of its Fishers distribution center.

Tim Ochs, an attorney with Indianapolis-based Ice Miller LLP, on Wednesday presented the company’s request to the Fishers Plan Commission to rezone 20 acres immediately east of its distribution facility at 12301 Cumberland Road.

The wholesale food distributor received a positive recommendation from the commission to change that zoning from residential and agricultural uses to industrial so the company can eventually add 69,000 square feet to its existing 230,000-square-foot facility. The expansion would take place in the next three to five years.

Ochs said US Foods is making its request now because the adjacent property recently became available. Without that property, he said US Foods wouldn’t be able to expand its only central Indiana plant  and would be forced to relocate.

The facility currently operates 24 hours a day, 6.5 days a week. US Foods employs 320 workers there, and the dry and cold goods storage expansion could create as many as 35 jobs when it’s completed.

US Foods is one of the country’s largest foodservice distributors, providing services to 300,000 restaurants and foodservice operators. It has  nearly 28,000 employees at more than 70 distribution locations.

“If you eat at a restaurant, there’s a very, very high probability that you’re eating something delivered by US Foods,” Ochs said.

In addition to the building improvements in Fishers, the planned expansion would add two parking areas with space for an additional 30 trucks and 120 cars.

Some neighbors expressed concerns about the potential impacts to flooding in the area, but commission member Brad DeReamer said he was confident Hamilton County would be able to address any issues.

  1. I hope the proposed plan includes adding a pizzaria to the site. If not, then Scotty McFadness should veto the plan because we all know by now that Scotty has to KEEP BRINGING THE PIZZA!!!!!!
