We need more Caleb Mills spirit

A special note of thank you to IBJ and Dr. Richard Gunderman for his recent article “Caleb Mills, architect of Indiana’s public schools.” [Indy Beacons, Aug. 14] Caleb Mills is a little-known Hoosier, but we owe him a debt of gratitude.

Those of us who are Shortridge alumni remember him well for his name inscribed on the school’s auditorium. And we all learned this treasured line, “A disciplined mind and a cultivated heart are elements of power.” Perhaps that’s why Shortridge has produced so many leaders.

In today’s divided country, perhaps a little more Caleb Mills spirit mixed with a more disciplined mind and cultivated heart would be a good practice.
