Jiffy Lube selects artists for mural project

Jiffy Lube of Indiana has announced the Hoosier artists who were selected to paint murals at five of the chain's Indianapolis-area stores this year.

The murals are part of Jiffy Lube’s Every Part Matters public art project in which the auto-service chain has teamed up with the Arts Council of Indianapolis. 

Steve Sanner, the president and owner of Jiffy Lube of Indiana, started the mural program in 2016 and intends to add murals to the exteriors of as many of his 48 stores as possible. Artists are paid for their work.

This year, a record 65 artists submitted applications.

The selected artists and Jiffy Lube locations are as follows:

— Indianapolis-based muralist Pamela Bliss will create a mural at 7965 U.S. 31 South. Bliss is known for painting the Kurt Vonnegut mural on Massachusetts Avenue and the Reggie Miller mural on Michigan Street in downtown Indianapolis.

— Christina Hollering, who teaches art at the University of Indianapolis, will create a mural at 7619 E. 96th St. on the city’s northeast side. Hollering does painting, cut-paper pieces and printmaking.

— Indianapolis painter Megan Jefferson will create a mural at 7825 E. U.S. 36 in Avon. Jefferson previously created murals for Jiffy Lube as part of the Department of Public Words, an artists’ collective.

— Hammond-based muralist and graffiti writer Ismael Muhammad Nieves, who works under the name ISH, will create a mural at 8580 N. Michigan Road. Nieves’ local activities include a commissioned mural he painted at Eskenazi Hospital in 2012.

— Kyle Ragsdale of Indianapolis, gallery curator at The Harrison Center, will create a mural at 10520 E. Washington St. Ragsdale’s local works include a downtown canal mural called “Hoosier Hospitality on the Boatload of Knowledge.”

All of the murals are expected to be complete by the end of October.

The five new murals will join nine completed murals at Jiffy Lube locations in Indianapolis, Brownsburg and Lafayette.
