A&E priority list includes two rock musicals, a batch of hot comics, more

Just try to fit in everything this weekend. Just try.

“American Idiot”

A Broadway musical driven by Green Day’s “American Idiot” album? Initial cynicism was understandable. How would a beloved disc hold up with “outsiders” performing it? Would it be reduced to being another (albeit louder) jukebox musical? Surprise: The show turned out to be a high-energy, heartfelt thrill leading to a national tour that rocked Clowes Hall a few seasons back. The Phoenix Theatre brings it to a more intimate space with a cast that includes, in his Phoenix debut, Spencer Curnutt (Lyric Opera of Chicago’s “Carousel”) as well as Eric Olson (“Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson”) and Lisa Ermel (“A Streetcar Named Desire”).

Limestone Comedy Festival

Here’s how much talent has been lined up for this annual Bloomington stand-up weekend: Dana Gould, one of the funniest comics out there, isn’t even mentioned on the fest website homepage. When Dana Gould is the undercard, you know you’re in for something good. Among other performers:  Janeane Garofalo, Kyle Kinane, Doug Benson and Michael Che, with shows at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre, The Comedy Attic, and more. A potential highlight “The Benson Interruption,” featuring the comic heckling a screening of “Hoosiers.”

“Jesus Christ Superstar”

Director/producer Bob Harbin’s annual summer musical (recall last year’s “Hair”) relocates from the Athenaeum to Marian University Theatre. There, he’ll be offering his take on the Andrew Lloyd Weber/Tim Rice rocker “Jesus Christ Superstar” making use of his core team of choreographer Kenny Shepard and music director Trevor Fanning. Julia Perillo, a semi-finalist in Michael Feinstein’s Great American Songbook Vocal Competition, plays Mary Magdalene.
