“Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play”

You’ve never seen a post-apocalyptic story like this: Anne Washburn’s play concerns a group of survivors whose recollections of past “Simpsons” episodes leads to, well, just see for yourself. Like “The Book of Morman,” it’s about the way we reconfigure stories as we pass them on, but it’s also about much more. Encyclopedic knowledge of “the Simpsons” is not required. Courtney Sales directs a cast that includes Eric Olsen, Jen Johansen, and Rob Johansen.

July 9-Aug. 9 Phoenix Theatre

Great Dance Classics

Got a sandwich and $5. Put the two together for an Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra lunchtime concert. This one, part of the ISO’s Lunch Break Series, highlights its Principal Clarinet David Bellman and Principal Contrabass Ju-Fang Liu in a program focused on dance music through the years, including pieces from the world of ballet and opera. For more from the ISO, look for concerts July 8 at Ellenberger Park, July 9 at Danville’s Martin Amphitheatre, and July 10-11 at Conner Prairie.

July 9 Hilbert Circle Theatre

“Smoke on the Mountain: Homecoming”

The fictional Sanders family is based in North Carolina, but its northern home has becoming Beef & Boards, which has produced each of the three “Smoke on the Mountain” shows and is working its way through a second cycle. This one, set in 1945, brings the gospel-music-singing family back to the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church when the goofy-but-beloved Rev. Oglethrope is called to a ministry in Texas, potential breaking up the close-knit family.
