Republican State Sen. Travis Holdman of Markle says distracted driving is dangerous for everyone on the road. His bill would allow people to use hands-free headsets or speaker systems, but texting and calls that require using hands would be off limits.
Indiana State Police records show that nearly 1,200 crashes this year involved cell phone use as a contributing factor. Four crashes resulted in death.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says nine states ban talking on a hand-held cell phone while driving and 28 states have banned texting while driving.
