Fire destroys 75 boats at Indianapolis storage facility

Authorities say a fire has destroyed 75 boats inside an Indianapolis storage facility, causing an estimated $1.5 million in damage.

The Indianapolis Fire Department said no one was injured in the fire at the Just Add Water Boats winter storage facility that was reported about 11:55 p.m. Sunday by multiple 911 callers. The facility is in the 4000 block of Bethel Avenue on the city's southeast side, near East Raymond Street and South Sherman Drive.

Dozens of firefighters worked for nearly two hours to get the fire under control. The department said all of the boats inside the facility were destroyed.

The fire department said the boats contained fuel, oil and magnesium, which made putting out the fire more complex. Water intensified the burning magnesium and spread the burning liquids, so the department used a product that leaves a foam coating in extinguishing the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Just Add Water Boats has a separate dealership at 234 S. Franklin Road, near Interstate 465 and U.S. 40, where customers can test-drive boats on a lake during warmer weather. The company was founded in 1972.
