The Indiana State Department of Health on Friday evening reported 165 more deaths from COVID-19 and another uptick in hospitalizations.

The department said 14,933 more people in the state have tested positive for COVID, the second-highest number on record behind Thursday’s count of 15,277. The state has reported 43,170 cases in total over the past three days, an average of 14,390 per day.

Marion County on Friday reported 2,807 new COVID-19 cases and 18 more deaths. Marion and every surrounding county except Shelby are at the red, or highest, pandemic advisory level.

The 165 new deaths raised the pandemic total to 18,959. The state has reported 526 deaths from COVID over the past four days, an average of 131.5 per day.

The health department said 3,314 people were hospitalized with the virus as of Thursday, an increase from 3,303 the previous day. That’s the highest mark since Dec. 2, 2020, when 3,362 people were hospitalized. The pandemic peak was 3,460, reached on Nov. 30, 2020.

COVID patients occupy 36.1% of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds. The state has only 9.9% of its ICU beds available overall.

The state released the latest statistics for breakthrough cases, hospitalizations and deaths on Thursday, reflecting cumulative data through Dec. 30. The numbers, which are updated weekly, showed that 132,247 Hoosiers who had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 have since tested positive for the virus, while 2,296 required hospitalization and 1,201 died. The average age of a breakthrough death was 79 years old.

More than 3.57 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Friday at 5 a.m. More than 1.4 million Hoosiers have gotten vaccine boosters.

The department said 59.5% of Indiana residents 12 and older are fully vaccinated.

  1. Not sure why this was a “Special Update” email. Just more of the same news. IBJ seems to be obsessed with the COVID numbers. Why don’t you just resign yourself to the fact that everyone who wants to be vaccinated (which, by the way, includes myself – I think you are an idiot not to get vaccinated) has gotten vaccinated. The IBJ crowing about how bad they think it is is NOT going to change anyone’s opinion at this late stage in the game.

    1. It’s still news man…and for many it’s THE news. And for the non believers, a steady drum that we have to be responsible. Dont gripe…skip the article and read about the game.

  2. Respectfully disagree with Troy and William. If you follow this headline one can’t claim it isn’t factual and news-based. Don’t criticize the messenger for the message. They aren’t stating an “opinion”, they are stating facts as reported by the Indiana Department of Health. It is more of the “same news”, that is true, but folks who don’t invest in the stock market could claim their disinterest in daily reporting from financial markets…up-down, up-down. It’s just “market news” and this is just “covid news”. It needs to be shared.

In this particular example, I appreciate the IBJ’s commitment to reporting facts because even though it may be of no interest to you, it is of interest to me. I would hope it would be recognized as relevant to the health and economies of the day and to others. If one feels differently then it is their responsibility to ignore the headline and move on to something that interests them more. Otherwise, one is simply asking them to “stop reporting news if it is bad” and, as Walter Cronkite said many years ago: “It isn’t our job to report on all the cats that DIDN’T get away today. “Veritatem Quaere, Veritatem Audi”

  3. At least these stories no longer bring out as many of the anti-science, anti-vax, “Covid isn’t killing anyone” comments.

Perhaps in the face of overwhelming facts, they have decided to keep quiet?

Or perhaps with this wave, almost everyone knows several people who got infected in the past month.

    1. You won’t vaccinate your way out of the problem.

So let’s treat this like we did in 2019, and quit the Fauci fear porn.

  4. Unfortunately the data on deaths is not being reported on a timely basis. Since this last surge started, November time frame, the daily death number reports are not daily and sometimes go back over two months. IBJ reported 131.5 deaths per day as the 4 day average which is not accurate. The 165 deaths they used to form this average are new deaths added from the period of 11/5/21 to 1/6/22. The Indiana State Department of Health reports a 7 day average of 35 deaths per day. Unfortunately without accurate daily numbers the press or even a member of the public can’t keep track of the daily average.

  5. I’d like the IBJ to dig into the details. Those who want transparency in data have been asking for 2 years:

“ The CDC director just said over 75% of “covid deaths” occurred in people with at least four comorbidities.”

Since Biden can’t shut down covid, suddenly all this data is getting shared publicly.
