An amateur photographer, Walter Carpenter, captured the street scene on March 9, 1913, where Kentucky Avenue met the intersection of Illinois and Washington streets. The confluence of the three streets created a huge intersection for cars, pedestrians and trolleys. At the time, Kentucky was one of four diagonal streets that reached deep into downtown as part of Alexander Ralston’s original layout for the city’s Mile Square. In the late 1960s, the city shortened Kentucky Avenue—which now ends at West Street—to make way for the Indiana Convention Center. Indiana and Massachusetts avenues have also been shortened. Only Virginia Avenue has maintained its original layout.
