Editor: The last paragraph’s definition of plurality is incorrect. A plurality of votes means to receive more than anyone else but less than 50%, which is what’s likely in this year’s GOP primary. That’s all that is required to win the primary or the general election.
One must exceed 50% to receive a majority, which may happen but is not required to win in Indiana.
This debate was a missed opportunity for the candidates to better define themselves. While the mix of questions was weak and not developed to highlight important issues or differences, the candidates did little to distinguish themselves, at least in a positive way. Did we really need to beat the Covid revisionist history to death again? Indiana does very poorly on education and health care. The discussion of education was lame and amateurish. Health care only came up with regard to costs and mental health but not access or outcomes. I really hope the candidates sharpen their messages and better distinguish themselves in future forums. Hoosiers deserve better than what we are seeing so far.
