Tire manufacturer Maxxis International-USA announced plans Monday to open a 350,000-square-foot distribution center along Interstate 65 in Whitestown.

The facility, set to open in Park 130 in August, will contain about 15,000 square feet of office space in addition to warehouse space, the company said.

Maxxis did not say how much it was spending to open the facility or how many workers it would employ in Whitestown.

Suwanee, Georgia-based Maxxis International-USA, a subsidiary of Taiwan-based Maxxis International, has operated in the United States since 1985.

The company has other distribution centers in Rancho Cucamonga, California; Grapevine, Texas; and in Suwanee.

Maxxis, one of the world’s 10 largest tire manufacturers, makes original-equipment and aftermarket tires for a number of uses, including automotive, light truck, bicycle, motorcycle, lawn and garden, industrial and ATV, as both.

The company said it has been rapidly expanding its business with major automakers.

Trade publication Tire Business said Maxxis has several original-equipment contracts with Midwest auto assemblers to supply space-saving spare tires.

Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette recently gave Maxxis a supplier award. The company supplies tires for Subaru models Outback and Impreza and will add the Ascent later this year, Tire Business reported.

“Indiana was an appealing choice for our new facility due to this state’s excellent transportation infrastructure, friendly business environment, and proximity to major automakers,” Maxxis International–USA President James Tzen said in written comments. “Whitestown is a rapidly growing area, with easy access to both major interstates and rail. This is an exciting time to locate a facility here, and we look forward to becoming a part of this community.”

Maxxis has operations in Asia, Europe and North America, and sells products in about 180 countries. It employs more than 30,000 people worldwide.

Founded in 1967 as a maker of bicycle tires, the company has annual sales of nearly $4 billion.
