Heartland Film Festival

A highlight is expected to be “LBJ,” the biopic starring Woody Harrelson and Jennifer Jason Leigh (with director Rob Reiner in attendance to receive Heartland’s Pioneering Spirit Lifetime Achievement Award). But a film festival should also be a place to blaze your own trail through the 200-plus films being screened. For give you a boost, I screened dozens of this year’s offerings to come up with ten recommendations. Angela Brown: “Moments in Time”

The opera star returns to join the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra for Samuel Barber’s stirring “Knoxville: Summer of 1915”—taken from the preamble to James Agee’s novel “A Death in the Family.” Also on the bill: Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella Suite.” Oct. 13 Schrott Center for the Arts Details

Ghost Stories at Crown Hill Cemetery

This bring-your-own-blanket (for sitting on and, perhaps, covering your head) event from Storytelling Arts of Indiana features appropriately creepy tales told around the headstones. Composer/pianist Pablo Ziegler teams with NPR’s “From the Top” host Christopher Riley for a “Two to Tango” evening, Oct. 15 at The Jazz Kitchen.

“Cabaret Poe” gets a new venue for this season at Circle Centre, Oct. 13-29.
