As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowOpposition is outstripping support for passing health care legislation this year, according to a USAToday/Gallup poll released Tuesday.
The phone survey of more than 1,000 Americans found 42 percent against a bill, with 35 percent in favor of it.
When respondents were asked how they would urge their member of Congress to vote, 49 percent said they would prefer opposition, while 44 percent would counsel support.
Not surprisingly, Democrats overwhelmingly favor reform (76 percent) while Republicans overwhelmingly oppose it (86 percent).
The difference-makers right now are independents. A majority of them now oppose a health care bill this year by a 53 percent to 37 percent margin.
